Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception

Our first stop is the magnificent Cathedral of Saint Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Peoria, where we'll enjoy a guided tour through one of Illinois' most beautiful and inspiring churches. Rich in history, breathtaking architecture, and deep faith, this cathedral offers a memorable beginning to our pilgrimage.

This sacred place is also at the heart of the remarkable life and legacy of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen. Born nearby, ordained a priest for the Diocese of Peoria, and forever connected to this community, Sheen's journey began here. After his renowned worldwide ministry, he returned home, and since 2019 his tomb has rested in the cathedral where his vocation first took root.

As you step inside the soaring Gothic sanctuary, you'll be surrounded by radiant stained glass, stunning sacred artwork, and a space filled with generations of prayer and devotion. The most moving moment of our visit is the opportunity to pray at Archbishop Sheen's tomb—a peaceful chapel where pilgrims from around the world come to seek inspiration, offer prayers, and give thanks for the life of a man whose message of Christ continues to touch hearts today.

The Tomb of Fulton Sheen

A highlight of our visit is the opportunity to pray at the tomb of Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen and spend time in the inspiring museum that beautifully shares the story of his extraordinary life, enduring faith, and worldwide ministry.

Archbishop Sheen's tomb is located in the peaceful side chapel of the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. After a long-awaited return to his beloved Diocese of Peoria, his remains were transferred from New York City's St. Patrick's Cathedral and laid to rest here in June 2019. Today, pilgrims from around the world come to this sacred place to pray, reflect, and honor his remarkable legacy.

Before departing, you'll have time to browse the cathedral gift shop for meaningful books, devotional items, and keepsakes. Then we'll gather together on the bus and continue on our pilgrimage.
